As we recently discussed the “She Shed”, we felt it necessary to discuss the infamous Man Cave as well. Options for the Man Cave are a direct result of the imagination of the owner. If you can dream it, we can design it.
The Modern Man Cave
A man cave is typically defined as a sanctuary, a place to hide from reality. Whether you want to fly solo or share with friends is completely up to you, but we have discovered most men want to share this peaceful palace with their friends.
Here are a few things to consider before building your man cave:
1. Location. Whether you’d like to claim the garage, the spare room, the entire upper level, the outdoor shed, or build an entirely separate building, the options are endless. Just make sure it’s a place where you are allowed to get a little loud and invite friends. For example, the spare bedroom next to the baby’s room is probably not a good idea.
2. Theme. Some of the best man caves are clearly identifiable. Whether you like the look of a vintage garage, a tribute to Marvel Comics, or a fully decorated football room (astroturf and all)…the theme must tie together, or it will look like a mess. We have also witnessed a few replica rooms that are truly spectacular. From an NFL locker room to a luxury car garage (images attached), this room can truly take any shape you wish.
3. Entertaining. Who would you like in your space? What would you like to do in your space? Plan accordingly. If you’re looking to create a tailgating hub, you’ll need ample electricity and plumbing for large televisions, surround sound, a full-sized refrigerator, craft beer taps, and you may need a new outdoor kitchen or outdoor area for corn hole and an occasional game of beer pong. If you’d like to also host poker night, be sure to not only include room for a poker table but be sure to have ample lighting, etc.
4. Seating. If you would like to entertain as described above, make sure you have ample room for seating and comfortable seating at that. Nothing is worse than having to watch a baseball game in extra innings while standing on your feet or on an uncomfortable folding chair. Sofas and recliners are a must.
