Rosemary District… Boom.
The story of Chinese bamboo is unique. While it’s planted like any tree and also requires water, fertile soil, and sunshine, it’s anything but “normal”. Typically, we plant the seed, in a few days or weeks, we see a sprout, then the tree gradually grows from there. Chinese bamboo is totally different.
In the first year of life, there are no visible signs of activity. In the second year, there are also no signs of activity, no sprout, nothing above the soil. The third and fourth year, still nothing. It’s beyond frustrating and I’m sure most people would have long forgotten about the tree. However, during the fifth year, serious magic happens. The Chinese bamboo tree grows up to 80 feet in just six weeks!
Welcome to the Rosemary District. For decades, Sarasota has nurtured the Rosemary District in hope of mirroring the growth pattern of Chinese bamboo. If you’ve driven around the Rosemary District any time soon, it doesn’t take long to realize, it has arrived!
According to Sarasota Magazine, 28 residential and commercial projects are in play. Half have already been completed in the last three years. “Three years ago, we begged people to buy in Vanguard Lofts,” says Frank Lambert, Premier Sotheby’s broker-associate. “They said we were crazy, [that we’d] never sell a condo in the Rosemary District for $500,000. Well, we’re sold out now, and the last two went for over $900,000 each.”
If you have a free afternoon, we urge you to take a drive to Central and 5th, have lunch at The Overton, play corn hole at Mandeville Beer Garden, and pick up some incredible cheeses at the Artisan Cheese Company. You’ll be amazed at the beauty and progress. Where you once saw homeless, you now see families with strollers and women carrying yoga mats from The Yoga Shack. It’s beyond impressive and will quickly become your new favorite hangout.
