The Most Popular Landscape Lighting Trends in 2024

Landscape lighting is a huge industry in Southwest Florida. As we live in the Sunshine State, we want to spend our time outdoors. Many freestanding homes have professionally landscaped yards in the front and back where our friends and family eat, live, work, and play.

Hands down, technology is constantly changing and evolving in the lighting world. Landscape lighting is no different.

When building or designing a home, we urge you to consider the latest trends in landscape lighting.

1. Cloud-Based Landscape Control Systems

  • This is the largest lighting trend of 2024, as it allows property owners to control their lighting from a smartphone or device.
  • A cloud-based control system allows a homeowner to program their lights from any location, which is a huge concern when so many Florida homeowners are transient.
  • Cloud-based systems also allow the user to control each fixture on its own from a single source.
  • Despite popular belief, labor and installation costs are cheaper on wireless systems.
  • Property owners can also set a weekly lighting schedule – based on their individual schedule rather than the standard “dusk-to-dawn” timers.
  • Timers can also be set based on areas or zones of the property. This allows for more efficient lighting.

2. LED Technology – LED lights are preferred for outdoor applications for three reasons:

  • The lights are more precise and point exactly where you want them.
  • You can create ambiance with LEDs by adjusting your correlated color temperature (CCT). Whether you are hosting friends or building a treehouse after hours, warmer temperatures are ideal for an intimate setting, and cooler temperatures are ideal for security or work purposes.
  • Unlike incandescents, LEDs are small and efficient, which makes the design possibilities endless. LEDs can be incorporated into everything from outdoor deck lighting to light strips under railings, walkway illumination, floodlights, step lights, and more.

3. Color-Changing Lights

Although a warm white LED glow is still the norm, color-changing lights are becoming increasingly popular, casting a full spectrum of hues. Homeowners generally do not use color-changing lights for their entire system but use them as an accent for showcasing trees or structures.

4. Discreet Fixtures

As LED lights are so vibrant, the lights do the work, so the fixture no longer has to. Outdoor fixtures are much smaller as the light is the focal point. People want to see the effect of the light, not the source itself.
