Whether your kids are off to school or married and have homes of their own, make the most of your home by converting the unused space to match your new lifestyle.
If you’re reading this article, chances are your lifestyle has changed significantly since the day you purchased your home. You no longer need the same number of bedrooms, the same number of bathrooms, or utilize the same rooms as once before. You’ve paid for every square foot of your home, so why not renovate it to match your current lifestyle?
Here are a few suggestions and ideas:
- Take a current inventory of your home. Instead of “Tom’s bedroom”, think 15’x18’ blank canvas. Instead of the Living Room, which you rarely use, think 14’x16’ of potential between the kitchen and family room. Every area of your home is fair game at this point.
- Take a current inventory of your life. What do you like to do? Do you have a new craft or hobby that could use a little space? Do you find yourself in the kitchen more than you used to be? Do you find yourself wanting to entertain more often? Do you have a new love for wine that could use a room of its own?
- Don’t ignore the outside. If you find yourself spending more time on your patio, how could you enhance that space? Would you like an outdoor bar? Flat-screen televisions? A well-deserved hot tub? Large dining area?
- Talk it out. Whether you talk to your spouse or call us, talk to someone about your ideas. They may notice rooms and spaces you’ve dismissed or deemed unusable. For example, they may have an idea for turning your attic into a theatre, your outdoor shed into a tiki bar, or turning your front porch into a koi pond. All space is fair game!
- Create a really fun wish list. This is where you get creative and think of things you’ve always “wanted”, but never “needed”. For example, adding a second master bedroom is a huge trend right now, as are safe rooms, outdoor living spaces, and outdoor kitchens.
